This afternoon Sony announced at the GamesCom stage in Cologne a new version of the PlayStation 3 console tentatively titled the PlayStation 3 Slim or "120 GB PS3". This new PS3 will be a little more than 1/3rd smaller [33% smaller and 36% lighter] and $100 cheaper than previous versions.
It boasts the same features as the current version of the PS3 on shelves now [so no backwards compatibility] adds on a 120 GB hard drive and sets it all up at the very respectable price of $299. Plus it looks darn sexy with a matte finish.
It will be available in a few weeks, hitting store shelves on September 1st.
In addition, as of tomorrow all current PS3 consoles will drop $100 in price. The only reason I would consider this option is if the bundles currently available entice you.
More details from the GamesCom event later today. Until then here is a message from SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton and some pics of the new PS3 slim [after the jump].
